Camden, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team fell on the road in a non conference game on Wednesday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Rutgers-Camden, 10-1, at Campbell’s Stadium . John Jay now stands at 2-8 on the season and its two game winning streak was snapped.
The host Scarlet Raptors scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead for good. Stating pitcher Marcos Almanzar (Brooklyn, NY / Telecommunications) allowed the first six batters to reach base before retiring the 7-8-9 hitters in the bottom half of the first inning.
The Bloodhounds got a run back in the top half of the second inning to pull to wthin two runs. John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys) led off the inning with a single to left. He later scored in the inning on a bases loaded walk by Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus). With just one out and the bases still loaded, the Bloodhonds had a chance to do further damage, but a sacrifice fly attempt was denied by the Rutgers-Camden fielders.
Rutgers-Camden tacked on another run in the bottom of the second and another in the bottom of the third.
The Scarlet Raptors got five unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a nine run advantage.
The Bloodhounds got had a run on six hits while playing error free baseball, while Rutgers-Camden had 10 runs on 11 hits with one error.
Almanzar went 5.2 innings and allowed 10 runs (five earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts. Luis Vega (Brooklyn, NY / ) and Enmanuel Rodriguez (Manhattan, NY / Manchester) combined for the final 2.1 innings in relief and allowed no runs on three hits.
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Mar. 13 for its 2008 home opener against Yeshiva University at 3:30 p.m.
