Bronx, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team split a conference doubleheader on Saturday morning as the Bloodhounds went one for two in a twin bill against Baruch College. The Bloodhounds lost the first game, 7-1, while John Jay came out on top 10-9 in the second game at Roberto Clemente State Park. John Jay is now 5-9 (1-1 CUNYAC) on the season.
In the first game the host Bearcats got a pitching gem out of ace starter Greg Polius who allowed one run (unearned) on two hits as the Bloodhounds trailed throughout.
Baruch College took a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning en route to leading from start to finish.
John Jay’s lone run in the opening contest came when Jorge Rosado (Santo Domingo, DR / Martin Luther King) scored on an RBI single by John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys). Earlier in the inning Rosado led off by reaching on an error by the Baruch pitcher.
But with nobody out and a run in, the Bloodhounds went in order to negate any John Jay rally.
The Bearcats tacked on insurance runs in the latter portion of the game, scoring two each in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the sixth to take a 7-1 advantage and go on to a Game 1 victory.
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY / New Dorp) suffered the loss in the first game. He went six full innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits and struck out four.
Johan Abad (Corona, NY / Flushing) recorded John Jay’s other hit in the contest, a one out single in the second inning.
In the second game the Bloodhounds fell behind 3-0 after the first inning and trailed during the early stages of the contest.
The Bloodhounds got on the board in the top of the second with a run as Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY / Mt. St. Michaels), who had a huge game going 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI, ripped an RBI single to score Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus) who singled earlier in the inning.
The hosts however got that run back in the second and added two more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead midway though.
But the Bloodhound bats came alive and seized the lead later in the contest. John Jay got four runs across the plate in the sixth inning to get back in it and John Jay was down 6-5.
The Bloodhounds got a bases clearing, three run double from Rosado that scored Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum), Steven Roman (Middletown, NY / Chapel Field Christian) and Guzman which highlighted the inning. Later in the inning Rosado scored on an RBI single by Massoni to get John Jay within a run.
But the Bloodhounds had another big inning in the sixth scoring five more times to take a commanding 10-6 lead.
John Jay got the scoring started in the inning when Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY / Manhattan Center) scored on an RBI single by Hernandez. Moments later Hernandez scored on an RBI single by Massoni. Eventually Massoni came around to score to complete the rally and so to did Rosado who reached on an error earlier in the inning.
Baruch made a final run in the bottom half of the seventh to get to within a run but too little too late as Luis Vega (Brooklyn, NY / Christ the King) pitched the final 2/3 inning to earn the save. Fellow relief pitcher Nico Rivera (Brooklyn, NY / Abraham Lincoln picked up the win in relief after going 4.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned).
John Jay returns to action on Sun. Mar. 30 for a single game with Baruch, noon at Legion Field.
