Jersey City, N.J. — The John Jay baseball team lost on the road on Tuesday as the dropped a non conference affair at New Jersey City University, 15-3, at Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. The Bloodhounds are now 7-10 this season.
The visiting Bloodhounds drew first blood on the Gothic Knights with a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Wity a base loaded and one out, Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus) reached on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded which allowed Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum), who led off the game with a walk, to score from third.
The lead was short lived however as the hosts came back with a four spot in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. The Gothic Knights, who scored at least one run in each inning, got a leadoff home run to tie the game. Eventually the first four batters, who all reached safely, came around to score.
John Jay, who was playing without last weeks conference Player of the Week, Chris Nastasi who was out of the lineup with a minor injury, was out hit 13-5 in the contest.
Down 7-1 in the fourth inning the Bloodhounds got two runs back with one swing of the bat as Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY / Mt. St. Michael’s Academy) ripped a two run homer to right field to score Johan Abad (Corona, NY / Flushing), who led off the inning with a walk to make the score 7-3.
But that was as close as the Bloodhounds would get as the Gothic Knights added a run in each of the next four innings, and four more in the eighth to take a 15-3 lead and win from there.
Marcos Almonzar (Brooklyn, NY / Telecommunications) suffered the loss after going six innings and allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, with three strikeouts.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Apr. 2 against Polytechnic Univ. at Floyd Bennett Field at 3 p.m.
