Game 1       Game 2

New York, N.Y. – The John Jay softball team was swept at home in a doubleheader on Tuesday as the Bloodhounds two games to St. Joseph’s-Patchogue. John Jay lost the first contest, 12-4 and the second game 4-0 at the Coleman Oval. John Jay is now 3-7 on the season.

The Bloodhounds came out hot to start the first game. After the visiting Golden Eagles went quietly in the first, the Bloodhounds scored four runs in the bottom half of the opening frame to take a 4-0 lead.

John Jay got the scoring started with two outs as first baseman Jasmine Miranda (Passaic, NJ / Passaic) ripped a single to drive in Alyce Miraglia (Lindenwood, NY / Stella Maris), who led off the inning with a single. Third baseman Nina Chao (Woodside, NY / Bryant) followed up with a double to score Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY / DeWitt Clinton) and Miranda. Moments later Sarah Balgobin (South Ozone Park, NY / John Adams) scorched a double to score Gomez and knock starting pitcher, Julie Cincotta out of the game after only 2/3 of an inning.

But those would be the only hits the Bloodhounds would get as two time Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year, Jennifer Martinez, came in relief and pitched the final 4.1 innings and allowed no hits and struck out 10.

John Jay still held a lead into the fifth inning, and led 4-1 before the Golden Eagles opened up with 11 runs in the top of the fifth to take a 12-4 lead and eventually win via the eight run mercy rule.

In the second game, the Golden Eagles took advantage of Bloodhound miscues that resulted in four unearned runs as John Jay fell in the nightcap, 4-0.

Chao started on the mound in the second contest and pitched brilliantly, allowing four runs (none earned) on three hits over seven innings.

St. Joseph’s-Patchogue scored a run in the second after its leadoff hitter reached on an error and came around to score from second on a base hit by Jennifer Vosilla who had two of the three Golden Eagles hits in the game.

The visiting team got three more unearned runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead, which proved to be more than enough.

Martinez pitched the second game and went the distance for the Golden Eagles, while scattering three hits and striking out 11.

The Bloodhounds had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the first but did not get the runner across. With two outs and a runner on first, Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY / Bronx Leadership), who went 2-for-3 in the second game, ripped a double to left. Pinch runner Olivia Marquez’s (Paso Robles, CA / Templeton) attempted to score from first but was called out at home to end the inning.

John Jay loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with a two out rally but could not get the runner across as Martinez recorded her tenth of 11 strikeouts in the game.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Apr. 2 against New York City Tech at Floyd Bennett Field at 3:30 p.m.
