Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team scored 14 runs in the first three innings to take a 14-0 lead early, and the Bloodhounds proved to have needed them as they defeated Drew University, 14-12, at Legion Field on Thursday to improve to 12-11 on the season. Up 14-4 going into the ninth, the Bloodhounds resisted a final inning scare from Drew who scored eight runs in the top of the ninth and had the tying run in scoring position when the game ended on a deep fly ball to leftfield.

John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys) had a tremendous day going 4-for-6 with two doubles, two runs and five RBI at the plate, and earned the win on the mound after going 2.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out four.

All nine starters recorded at least one hit as John Jay pounded out 21 hits in the contest.

Right fielder Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus) went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI, while Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY / Manhattan Center) was 3-for-5 with two runs, four RBI and was a triple shy of the cycle. His two run homer, a blast to right center in the bottom of the third, capped the scoring for the Bloodhounds who scored 14 runs for the second time in as many games.

The Bloodhounds raced out to a 9-0 lead after the first inning. Massoni ripped a single up the middle to drive in Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum), who led off the bottom of the first with a single to right center en rout to a 3-for-5 afternoon. The barrage continued as Cestaro blasted one of his two doubles to score Massoni and Jorge Rosado (Santo Domingo, DR / Martin Luther King), who was 2-for-4 with three runs. Massoni capped the inning, batting for the second time in the frame with a bases clearing double that scored Rosado, Hernandez and Steven Roman (Middletown, NY / Chapel Field Christian), who was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The visiting Rangers chipped away at the lead tenuously through the middle innings, scoring two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and another in the seventh to get the lead down to 10 runs as the Bloodhounds were coasting along. Nixon Feliz was 2-for-5 with three RBI, while teammate John Minio was 4-for-6 with three runs and two doubles for Drew.

John Jay used six pitchers on the afternoon including Massoni, Luis Vega (Brooklyn, NY / Christ the King), Daniel Rodriguez (Brooklyn, NY / Abraham Lincoln), Nico Rivera (Brooklyn, NY / Abraham Lincoln), Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY / New Dorp) and Enmanuel Rodriguez (Manhattan, NY / Manchester) who each went one or two innings each and combined for eight strikeouts.
