Softball Posts a Pair of Shutouts in Doubleheader Sweep over College of St. Elizabeth

Morristown, N.J.— The John Jay softball team outscored the College of St. Elizabeth (CSE), 12-0, over two games on Friday as the Bloodhounds, winners of four in a row, swept the Eagles in a doubleheader, winning the first game 4-0 and the second 8-0, behind outstanding pitching performances by Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY / Newtown) and Nina Chao (Woodside, NY / Bryant).
 
In the first game the Bloodhounds got a run in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh to ensure the win.
 
John Jay got the scoring started in the third inning when Jasmine Miranda (Passaic, NJ / Passaic) scored from third on a fly ball to leftfield.
 
The Bloodhounds tacked on another run in the fourth on a solo homerun by Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY / James Madison).
 
In the sixth inning Lam helped her cause by sprinting home from third on a wild pitch by the CSE pitcher. Finally in the seventh the Bloodhounds rounded out the scoring as Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY / Bronx Leadership) scored on an error by the Eagles’ leftfielder.
 
Lam in the meanwhile held the Eagles to five hits and struck out seven en route to her first shutout of the season.
 
In the second game John Jay scored runs in the first, second, third and fifth to go up 8-0 after 4 1/2 and win via the five inning mercy rule. Each of the nine batters had at least one hit and seven of the nine batters had two hits as John Jay had 16 hits in the contest.
 
The Bloodhounds got two across in the first when Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY / DeWitt Clinton) ripped a two out double to score Nunez and Perez, who both recorded singles. For the game both got a pair of hits as Nunez was 2-for-3, while Perez was 2-for-4.
 
The scoring continued in the second when Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY / Lehman), who was 2-for-4 with four RBI, ripped a single to score Miranda, who was 2-for-3, and Pamela Peralta (Bronx, NY / John F. Kennedy), also 2-for-3.
 
In the third inning Chao, who was 2-for-3, laced a triple and scored on a single by Miranda.
 
John Jay got three more across in the fifth inning to go up by eight. Chao, who led off the inning with a single, scored from third on an error by the CSE first baseman. Later in the frame, Pena got another pair of ribbies on a double that scored Peralta and Alyce Miraglia (Lindenwood, NY / Stella Maris), who was 2-for-4.
 
Chao pitched five shutout innings and allowed seven hits and struck out two.
 
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Apr. 15 at Hunter College for a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
