Box Score
Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team rolled to victory, taking the rubber game of a three game conference weekend set with the College of Staten Island as the Bloodhounds beat their arch rival Dolphins, 19-2, at American Legion Field on Monday. With the win the Bloodhounds improved to 14-12 (6-3 CUNYAC) and moved into a tie for first place with the Dolphins. But John Jay owns the tiebreaker by way of taking two of three in the series.
The Bloodhounds pounded out 21 hits and led from start to finish. Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY / Manhattan Center) led the way going 5-for-5 with a triple, three runs and an RBI. Eight of the nine starters in the batting order recorded at least one hit and each starter scored at least one run.
After a scoreless first inning, John Jay got five runs across the plate in the second inning to get the scoring started. Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus), who was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, came in to score the first run of the game when an infield single by Steven Roman (Middletown, NY / Chapel Field Christian) drove him home.
Moments later Perez ripped a single to drive in Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY / Mt. St. Michaels), who was 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI. The inning was capped on a two run single up the middle by John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys) that scored Perez and Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum) who was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI
CSI got a run back in the fourth and another in the fifth off of Massoni who started the contest on the hill and pitched seven strong and allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out four en rout to winning his fourth game of the season (4-1).
But the pair of runs would be all the Dolphins would get. The Bloodhounds went on to score 14 runs between the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to break the contest open.
John Jay put up a five spot in the sixth inning, with four of the runs coming off the bat of Chris Nastasi (Bayville, NY / IMG Academy) via a grand slam homerun down the leftfield line that scored Hernandez, Massoni and Jorge Rosado (Santo Domingo, DR / Martin Luther King), who scored twice on the afternoon. For the game Nastasi was 2-for-5 with three runs and four RBI.
The Bloodhounds went on to score six more times in the seventh inning to take a 16-2 lead and put the game out of reach. A two run single by Guzman that drove home Cestaro and Nastasi capped the inning as John Jay was well on its way to its most lopsided conference win this season.
The Bloodhounds added three more runs to the score in the eighth. Pinch hitter Nick Bentivegna (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph’s by the Sea) ripped a double to left center to score Nastasi. Later in the inning, Bentivegna came around to score run number 19 on a double by Guzman.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Apr. 15 at Rutgers-Newark at 3:30 p.m.
