New York, N.Y. – The John Jay softball team lost a pair of tight games on Tuesday as the Bloodhounds were swept in a doubleheader by Hunter College, losing the first game, 7-6 and the second game 7-5. John Jay is now 8-15 (2-6 CUNYAC) on the season.
In the first game, the host Hawks got two runs across in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. But the Bloodhounds got on the board in the top of the second inning to cut the lead in half.
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY / Bryant) cranked a solo homerun, the first in her collegiate career, to put the Bloodhounds on the board.
Hunter established a cushion with a four run frame in the bottom half of the third to go up 6-1.
The score stayed that way into the sixth inning when the Bloodhounds struck again with another run.
Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY / Bronx Leadership), who was 3-for-4 with two runs, led off the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by
Jasmine Miranda (Passaic, NJ / Passaic) .
Hunter however added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth that proved to be vital as the Hawks went up 7-2.
The Bloodhounds had a four run frame in the top of the seventh to pull to within a run, but not quite enough as Hunter held on.
Alyce Miraglia (Lindenwood, NY / Stella Maris) led off the inning with a walk. She came around to score after
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Girls) reached on an error on the Hawks right fielder.
Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY / Lehman) ripped a single to score Bonici. A few batters later
Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY / James Madison) and Nunez recorded back to back singles, and both came into score on a two-run single by
Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY / DeWitt Clinton). But the Bloodhounds failed to punch home another run as the Bloodhounds left the tying run in scoring position.
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY / Newtown) went six full and allowed seven runs on 12 hits and struck out two.
In the second game the Bloodhounds scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead after 2 1/2 with just one swing of the bat. Pena blasted a three run shot over the leftfield fence to score Bonici, who was 2-for-4 in game two, and
Pamela Peralta (Bronx, NY / John F. Kennedy), 2-for-3.
Hunter got a run back in the bottom of the third, but the Bloodhounds reclaimed a three run advantage with another run in the fourth. Miranda ripped a single to drive in Nunez, who led off the inning with a single and was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
The Hawks countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to pull back to within two, but John Jay took another three run lead with a run in the fifth. Nunez ripped another single as this one scored Bonici, who reached on an error by the Hunter shortstop.
But in the bottom of the fifth Hunter plated five runs to take a 7-5 lead and Hunter held on from there.
Chao went six full in the nightcap and allowed seven runs on eight hits in the contest.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Apr. 16 at Medgar Evers College, at 4 p.m. at Floyd Bennett Field.
