Box Score
Newark, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team lost on the road Tuesday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Rutgers-Newark University, 18-4, at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium as the Bloodhounds now stand at 14-13 on the season.
Though John Jay suffered its most lopsided loss of the season, the game was close for much of the way. The Bloodhounds gained the initial lead and led 2-0 after the first half inning.
Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus) ripped a single up the middle to drive home Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum) and Jorge Rosado (Santo Domingo, DR / Martin Luther King) who recorded back to back singles to lead off the contest. For the game, Hernandez was 3-for-4 with two runs, while Rosado was 2-for-4 with two runs.
The host Scarlet Raiders got a run back in the bottom half of the first to cut the lead in half. And the game remained 2-1 into the fourth inning when Rutgers-Newark tied the game with another one run inning.
But the Bloodhounds came back to counter in the top half of the next frame with another pair of runs to take a 4-2 lead. Chris Nastasi (Bayville, NY / IMG Academy), who was 2-for-4 with an RBI, ripped a single to left to drive home Hernandez. Moments later Johan Abad (Corona, NY / Flushing) smoked a single through the right side to score Rosado. John Jay could have induced further damage in the inning as they loaded the bases with two outs, but failed to strike a blow to cushion the lead,
And the two run lead proved to be short lived as the Scarlet Raiders stormed back with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-4 lead. And the lead remained that way into the eighth inning when Rutgers-Newark put up another eight spot to take a 14 run lead and put the game out of reach.
The Bloodhounds recorded eight hits in the contest.
Nico Rivera (Brooklyn, NY / Abraham Lincoln) suffered his first loss of his college career to fall to 5-1 on the season. He went 4.1 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out one.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Apr. 16 at St. Joseph’s-Patchogue at 3:30 p.m.
