Patchogue, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team lost a close one on Wednesday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated by St. Joseph’s-Patchogue, 7-6 at Alfano Field. John Jay is now 14-14 on the season.
The Bloodhounds scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Chris Nastasi (Bayville, NY / IMG Academy), who was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI, ripped a single in the opening frame to drive in Jorge Rosado (Santo Domingo, DR / Martin Luther King) who reached first on a single and went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
John Jay added another run in the third to take a 2-0 advantage. Johan Abad (Corona, NY / Flushing), also 3-for-5 along with a run and RBI, laced a two out single to score Nastasi.
The Bloodhounds maintained the shutout into the bottom of the fifth when the host Golden Eagles put up four runs to lead 4-2.
But John Jay came right back to counter in the next inning with three runs to reclaim the lead and led 5-4. Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum) ripped a two run single to drive home Abad and Steven Roman (Middletown, NY / Chapel Field Christian). Moments later Rosado scorched a base hit to score Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY / Manhattan Center) who went 4-for-4 with a run.
But St. Joseph’s-Patchogue scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead frog ahead and take a lead they would not relinquish.
The Golden Eagles then added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth that proved to be needed.
John Jay got a run back in the top of the ninth to pull back to within one, but not enough as the Bloodhounds fall back to .500 on the season. Rosado led off the inning with a double down the right field line, and came around to score on a ground out by Nastasi. But the Golden Eagles allowed no further damage as they held on for the win.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Apr. 19 at Mitchell College for a doubleheader starting at noon.
