Bronx, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team swept a doubleheader taking two games from Lehman College on Saturday as the Bloodhounds won game one 16-5 before taking out the Lightning in game two, 12-0. Both games were five inning wins for the Bloodhounds who are now 10-17 (5-6 CUNYAC).
In game one John Jay scored at least one run in each inning en route to the mercy rule win. The Bloodhounds got a run in the bottom half of the first to take a 1-0 lead as
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY / Bryant), who was 3-for-4 with four RBI, singled home
Pamela Peralta (Bronx, NY / John F. Kennedy), who led off the game by being hit by the pitch and going 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and two RBI.
But Lehman rallied back in the bottom of the first with three runs to take a 3-1 lead after an inning of play. The Bloodhounds rallied right back however with three runs of their own in the top of the second to take a 4-3 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two runs single by
Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY / Lehman) that scored
Jasmine Miranda (Passaic, NJ / Passaic), who was 1-for-3 with a triple, three runs and two RBI, and
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Girls) who was 2-for-5 with a triple, three runs and three RBI.
John Jay then lengthened its lead in the third inning with five more runs to take a 9-4 lead after 2 1/2. The Bloodhounds sent 11 batters to the plate in that frame and the inning was sparked by two run singles by Peralta and Chao.
Lehman came back with one run in the bottom half, but the Bloodhounds matched it with a run of their own in the top of the fourth on an RBI triple by Bonici that scored Peralta who reached base on a double.
The host Lightning came back with another run in the bottom of the fourth, but John Jay put up a six spot in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach and move on to victory.
John Jay pounded out 15 hits in the first game and five players had at least two hits in the game.
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY / Newtown) earned the win after pitching five full innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with two strikeouts.
In the second game scored 12 runs and recorded eight hits en route to another conference win on the afternoon.
John Jay scored in four of the five innings on its way to a shutout win. Pena, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI in game two ripped a single to drive home
Alyce Miraglia (Lindenwood, NY / Stella Maris) who led off with a single and scored four times in the contest.
The Bloodhounds added two more runs in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead on back to back sacrifice flies, the first one by Chao to score Miraglia, the next one by
Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY / Bronx Leadership) that scored Bonici who was 2-for-3 in game two with a triple, two runs and three RBI.
In the next inning the Bloodhounds tacked on two more runs on Bonici’s triple that scored Miranda, who was 2-for-3 in game two, and Miraglia.
The Bloodhounds then pounded out seven more runs in the fifth to take a 12-0 lead and go on to victory from there.
Chao pitched the second game and recorded her third shutout of the season. She went five full and scattered two hits and struck out three batters.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Apr. 22 for a doubleheader at Farmingdale State starting at 3 p.m.
