New London, Conn.— The John Jay baseball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday as the Bloodhounds were swept in a doubleheader, losing to Mitchell College. The Bloodhounds lost the first contest 5-1 before falling in the second game 13-7 at Mitchell’s Alumni Field. John Jay is now 14-16 (6-5 CUNYAC).

In the first game the host Pequots scored a run in the first and another in the second to take a 2-0 lead and Mitchell College led from start to finish.

The Bloodhounds got a run back in the top of the third inning to cut the Mitchell lead in half. John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys), who was 1-for-3 with an RBI, drove in John Jay’s lone run. He ripped a double to score Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum) who reached on a single with one out.

The Bloodhounds recorded four hits apiece and got one each from Massoni, Hernandez, Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus) and Chris Nastasi (Bayville, NY / IMG Academy).

John Jay left seven runners on base in the opener and was struck out 11 times by Mitchell ace pitcher Jeremy Chapman who went the distance and walked none on four hits.

Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY / New Dorp) went six full for the Bloodhounds and allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out five.

In game two the Bloodhounds scored a run in the second inning and another in the third to take a 2-0 lead after 2 1/2 inning of play. In the second inning Johan Abad (Corona, NY / Flushing) ripped a one out double to score Nastasi who reached base after being hit by the pitch. During the next inning Massoni, who was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI in game two, recorded a sacrifice fly to drive home Hernandez who was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs.

Mitchell quickly came back and capitalized in the bottom of the third, plating five runs in the fame to take a 5-2 lead after three.

John Jay got another run in the top of the sixth inning to narrow the deficit to two runs (5-3). After being hit by the pitch for the second time in the contest, Nastasi came around to score on a ground out by Nick Bentivegna (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph’s by the Sea) who was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

But the Pequots put together a two out rally in the bottom of the sixth scoring eight runs (all with two outs) to take a 13-3 lead.

And the insurance proved to be vital as John Jay counted back with four runs in the top of the last inning to narrow the margin somewhat, but not enough as the Bloodhounds suffered their first City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) sweep in several years.

The Bloodhounds recorded eight hits in the game and got at least one hit from seven of the nine batters in the order.

Nico Rivera (Brooklyn, NY / Abraham Lincoln) suffered the loss after going two plus innings and allowing three runs on three hits.

John Jay returns to action on Sun. Apr. 20 at Mitchell College for the third game of the three game CUNYAC set starting at noon.
