New London, Conn.— The John Jay baseball team avoided being swept in a conference series this weekend by taking home the final game of a three game conference set with Mitchell College as the Bloodhounds defeated the Pequots, 11-4 at Mitchell’s Alumni Field on Sunday. With the win the Bloodhounds improve to 15-16 on the season and 7-5 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play.

The Bloodhounds led much of the way. The Pequots scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead early. But John Jay got on the board in the top of the second to cut the lead in half. Second baseman Albert Cepeda (New York, NY / Graphic Arts) scorched a two out single to drive in Johan Abad (Corona, NY / Flushing), who was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Abad’s only out of the day came in the fifth inning when he was robbed of a homerun by the Mitchell centerfielder.

John Jay then took the lead in the top of the third and held it for the rest of the game. The Bloodhounds got three runs across to take a 4-2 advantage. Abad ripped a single to score Chris Nastasi (Bayville, NY / IMG Academy) who was 2-for-5 with two runs in the game. Moments later Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY / Mt. St. Michael’s) recorded a two run single to drive home Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus) and Abad.

John Jay led by as much as four in the middle stages of the game and took a 6-2 lead in the top of the sixth as starting pitcher John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys) helped his cause by ripping a double that scored Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY / Manhattan Center) and Steven Roman (Middletown, NY / Chapel Field Christian). Perez had another four hit game as he went 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI to close out the week with 15 hits.

Mitchell got a pair of runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a homerun to make the score 6-4. But the Bloodhounds scored a run in the eighth and four more in the ninth to take a seven run lead and it proved to be enough.

John Jay pounded out 16 hits in the contest and each player in the starting lineup had at least one hit

Pitching wise, Massoni picked up his fifth win of the season and improved to 5-1 overall. He went 5.0 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and struck out five.

John Jay returns to action on Tue. Apr. 22 at Mt. St. Mary’s at 5:30 p.m.
