New York, N.Y. – The John Jay softball team closed out its 2008 conference schedule with a smooth win over York on Thursday afternoon as the Bloodhounds defeated the Cardinals 13-2 at East River Park. With the win the Bloodhounds improve to 11-19 overall and 6-6 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play.
The Bloodhounds led from start to finish and were in control from the outset. After York was retired in the first inning, John Jay quickly took care of business and scored nine of their 13 runs in the first inning en route to a five inning mercy rule win.
After scoring nine in the opening frame, John Jay got three in the second and one in the third to score the win.
The first five base runners in the bottom of the first scored, and the Bloodhounds got the scoring started as Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Girls), who had a big afternoon going 3-for-4 with a run and five RBI, ripped a two run homer to score Alyce Miraglia (Lindenwood, NY / Stella Maris) to give the Bloodhounds an early 2-0 advantage.
But the Bloodhounds, who pounded out 11 hits in the contest, were not finished. Later in the inning Nina Chao (Woodside, NY / Bryant), who was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, ripped a triple to score Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY / Bronx Leadership) who went 2-for-2. Moments later Nunez and Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY / James Madison) scored on back to back doubles by Dayna Navatta (College Point, NY / Bayside), who was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Jasmine Miranda (Passaic, NJ / Passaic), 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Navatta later scored on an error by the York catcher and Miranda scored on an RBI single by Bonici, batting for the second time in the inning. Olivia Marquez (Paso Robles, CA / Templeton) also recorded a run scoring on a base hit by Nunez. The Bloodhounds rounded out the scoring when Miraglia reached home on a wild pitch, scoring for the second time in the inning.
York got two runs back in the top of the second, but John Jay got three more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 12-2 lead. Bonici ripped a two run single to score Miranda and Marquez. Later in the inning Chao nailed a single to drive home pinch hitter Sarah Balgobin (South Ozone Park, NY / John Adams), who reached on a fielder’s choice.
Navatta went the distance, pitching five innings allowing two runs (one earend) on three hits and struck out three to earn the win.
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Apr. 25 as it wraps up its 2008 regular season with a doubleheader at SUNY Purchase at 3 p.m.
