Baseball Overpowers CCNY, Sweeps Beavers on Saturday

Brooklyn, N.Y.— Chris Nastasi (Bayville, NY / IMG Academy) was a combined 6-for-6 while batting for the cycle with five runs and 11 RBI to help the John Jay baseball team to a pair of conference wins over the City College of New York (CCNY) on Saturday afternoon. The Bloodhounds defeated the Beavers 11-7 in the first game before downing them in the second game 16-7. With the wins the Bloodhounds are 19-16 (9-5 CUNYAC).
 
In the first game the Bloodhounds fell behind 1-0 after a half inning before quickly putting up three runs in the bottom of inning one to take a 3-1 lead after the first. Nastasi, who was 3-for-3 with two runs and five RBI in game one, put three runs on the board for the Bloodhounds with one swing of the bat when he belted a three run homer to straightaway center to score Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum) and John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys) who also had a pair of huge games including a 3-for-4 two double, three run, two RBI performance in game one.
 
The Bloodhounds increased their lead to 7-1 after the second inning with a four run frame. Massoni ripped a single to score Hernandez, and the next batter, Nastasi, ripped an RBI single to score Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY / Manhattan Center). Johan Abad (Corona, NY / Flushing) hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Massoni. And the Bloodhounds closed out the scoring in inning two with an RBI single off the bat of Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY / Mt. St. Michael’s) to score Nastasi.
 
John Jay proceeded to score a run in the third on an RBI double by Massoni to score Steven Roman (Middletown, NY / Chapel Field Christian). John Jay added two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to maintain the lead as the Bloodhounds rolled to a four run decision.
 
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY / New Dorp) pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on 13 hits and struck out seven to pick up the win, his second of the season. Luis Vega (Brooklyn, NY / Christ the King) struck out the final two batters of the game in relief to help preserve the win.
 
In the second game, the visiting Beavers rallied out to a 6-0 lead early CCNY got two runs in the first, three in the second and one in the third to go up by a half dozen runs after 2 1/2 innings.
 
But John Jay cut into the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third to get to within two. The Bloodhounds started the scoring on a two runs single by Nastasi, who was 3-for-3 with three runs and six RBI, that scored Roman and Massoni, who was 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI in the nightcap. Later in the inning Abad, who was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBI, doubled to center to score Nastasi. Guzman, who was 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI, laced a single to left to score Guzman.
 
In the next inning the Bloodhounds picked up where they left off, lighting up the scoreboard with 12 runs (on just five hits) to take the lead and pull away, while knocking two Beavers pitchers out of the contest in the process.
 
Guzman recorded a two run single that scored Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus) and Nastasi to give John Jay the lead. The highlight of the inning came on a bases clearing triple by Nastasi, batting for the second time in the inning, that scored three runs.
 
John Jay ended the contest with 16 runs on 12 hits, while eight of the nine members of the Bloodhounds scored at least once in the contest.
 
Vega picked up the win in relief after going 5 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five.
 
John Jay returns to action on Sun. Apr. 27 for a single game against CCNY, noon at Kingsborough Community College.
