Purchase, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team wrapped up its 2008 regular season with a pair of non conference losses on the road as the Bloodhounds lost to SUNY Purchase in both games of a doubleheader losing the first game 5-4 and the second game 7-4. John Jay ends its 2008 regular season with a 12-21 record.
In the opening game the Bloodhounds took command from the outset scoring three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead. After the first three runners,
Alyce Miraglia (Lindewood, NY / Stella Maris),
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Girls) and
Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY / Lehman), reached base, all came around to score to start the contest.
John Jay got the scoring started when Pena, who was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI in game one, reached on an error by the Panthers’ second baseman to drive in Miraglia. The Bloodhounds got its second run of the frame when
Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY / Bronx Leadership) laced a single that scored Bonici who was 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs. Pena then scored on a base hit by
Jasmine Miranda (Passaic, NJ / Passaic).
But the lead was short lived as SUNY Purchase came back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to tie the contest at 3-3.
The score remained deadlocked into the fifth inning when the Panthers got two runs that proved to be enough.
Down 5-3 going into the seventh inning, John Jay got a run back to cut the lead to 5-4, and the tying run was on first with one out, but the Bloodhounds could not punch the run across.
John Jay had six hits in the affair and left six runners on base.
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY / Newtown) went six full innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out four in the contest.
In the second game John Jay fell behind 3-0 after the first inning and the Bloodhounds never led in the game.
After spotting the home team a trio of runs, John Jay got two back in the top of the second to cut the deficit to one. Nunez and
Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY / James Madison), who was 2-for-3 in the contest, scored on unearned runs to edge closer.
But Purchase added another trio of runs in the bottom of the third to lead 6-2 after three innings. And the Panthers scored again in the bottom of the sixth to go up 7-2 as John Jay came to bat in the seventh.
The Bloodhounds did not go down quietly in the final inning and got a pair of runs before leaving the bases loaded when the game ended.
Miranda led off the top of the seventh with a single, and with one out Lam recorded a single to move Miranda to second. Next
Dayna Navatta (College Point, NY / Bayside) and Bonici followed up with back to back walks to force Miranda home with John Jay’s third run of the game. The next batter, Pena, reached on a fielder’s choice that forced Bonici out at second, but Lam dashed across the plate to cut the Purchase lead to three with the potential go ahead run now at the plate. But the final batter reached on a fielder’s choice to end the game as John Jay’s come back bid came up short.
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY / Bryant) went six innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits and fanned two batters.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Apr. 30 for a CUNYAC single elimination play-in game. The Bloodhounds have earned the No. 4 seed for the conference tournament and will host Brooklyn College, the No. 5 seed, at the Coleman Oval at 3:30 p.m.
