Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team lost a pair of conference games on Thursday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the College of Staten Island (CSI). John Jay lost the first contest 9-1 and fell in the second game 13-1 as they are now 4-9 on the season.
The host Dolphins scored a run in the first inning to take the initial lead. But the Bloodhounds came back with a run in the top of the second to tie the game. Dayna Navatta (College Point, NY / Bayside) laced a two out triple in her first at bat of the season to drive in Nina Chao (Woodside, NY / Bryant) to even the score.
But CSI scored four more times in the third inning and three in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.
The Dolphins scored another run in the bottom of the sixth to win the game via the eight run mercy rule.
The Bloodhounds recorded two hits in the contest. Starting pitcher Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY / Newtown) recorded an infield single in the third for the Bloodhounds’ only other hit in the contest.
On the mound, Lam went 5.2 innings and allowed nine runs and struck out two.
In game two, CSI scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings to take a 13-0 lead before winning 13-1 via the mercy rule.
The Dolphins were limited to four hits, but capitalized on a John Jay season high five errors.
John Jay’s lone run came in the top half of the fifth inning when Pamela Peralta (Bronx, NY / John F. Kennedy) raced home after Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Girls) reached on a CSI error.
The Bloodhounds recorded four hits in the contest, including one each by Bonici, Peralta, Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY / Lehman) and Catherine Koeppel (Danbury, CT / Danbury).
Chao suffered the loss on the mound in the second game after going two innings and allowing six run on two hits. Navatta pitched the final two innings and allowed seven runs on two hits and struck out four.
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Apr. 4 at Richard Stockton for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
