Bronx, N.Y. — John Jay baseball went one for two on Sunday as the Bloodhounds split a conference doubleheader with Lehman College. The Bloodhounds lost the first game, 6-1 and took the nightcap 4-2 as John Jay, who served as the home team at Lehman’s South Field, now stands at 9-11 (3-2 CUNYAC) on the season.
Lehman College scored a run in the first and four more in the second to take a 5-0 lead after two innings in the first game. The Lightning struck quickly in the top of the first as leadoff hitter Jhonny Reyes led off the game with a single, and two stolen bases later scored from third on a triple.
The Lightning got four more across in the top of the second. The first four batters reached base safely to start the inning, and all four eventually scored. Reyes ripped a two run single to cap the inning to give Lehman the five run advantage.
The Bloodhounds got a run back in the bottom of the second when Steven Roman (Middletown, NY / Chapel Field Christian), who was 0-for-2 with a walk, scored from third on an RBI single by Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY / Murry Bergtraum), who was 2-for-4.
But John Jay, who left six runners on base, including five in the first two innings, failed to get another run across as the Bloodhounds ended the inning with two runners in scoring position.
Johan Abad (Corona, NY / Flushing) ripped a two out double in the third inning which proved to be John Jay’s fourth and final hit of the contest as Lehman’s Emmanuel Vera, who went the distance allowing a run on four hits with nine strikeouts, retired the final 13 Bloodhounds, while not allowing another base runner en route to victory.
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY / New Dorp) pitched a full seven and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits and fanned four batters.
In the second game, the Bloodhounds scored a run in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth to take a 4-0 advantage and win 4-2.
Jorge Rosado (Santo Domingo, DR / Martin Luther King) went 2-for-3 with a run, while six other starters recorded one hit apiece in the win.
The Bloodhounds started the scoring with two outs and nobody on as Roman was hit by a pitch and stole second. He then scored as Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY / Manhattan Center) ripped a single to drive him in.
In the third inning Rosado led off with a triple and came home when John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys) reached on an error by the Lehman first baseman. Massoni eventually scored on an RBI single by Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ / Paramus).
The Bloodhounds added an unearned run in the fourth on a brilliant play turned bad for Lehman. With runners on first and third, Rosado ripped a shot, but was robbed of the hit by the Lightning third baseman. In an attempt to double Hernandez off first, the throw went wild, allowing Perez to trot home from third.
Meanwhile the run support proved to be enough for starting pitcher Nico Rivera (Brooklyn, NY / Abraham Lincoln) who picked up his team best fifth win on the season and improve to 5-0. He went 5.0 innings and allowed two runs and struck out three. Luis Vega (Brooklyn, NY / Christ the King) picked up the save, going two innings and striking out one.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Apr. 7 for a single game at Lehman starting at 3 p.m.
