Bronx, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team took the rubber game of a three game set as the Bloodhounds defeated Lehman College, 10-9, on Monday afternoon on South Field at Lehman College. John Jay is now 10-11 (4-2 CUNYAC) on the season.
The early stages of the contest proved to be a pitchers duel. But the host Lightning struck first in the bottom half of the third inning with a trio of runs to grab a 3-0 advantage.
But the Bloodhounds eventually roared back and grabbed the lead with a barrage of runs over a two inning span. John Jay scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, then scored five more in the sixth to go up 9-3.
The Lightning proved to be gutsy however and came back with four runs in the bottom half of the sixth to make the score 9-7. Lehman scored another run in the seventh to pull to within one as John Jay went into the final inning up 9-8.
The Bloodhounds got an insurance run that proved to be the game winner in the top of the ninth. Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY / Manhattan Center), who was 1-for-5, grounded out to short to score Johan Abad (Corona, NY / Flushing), who led off the inning by getting hit by the pitch. Abad was 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the contest.
Lehman managed to score a run in the bottom of the ninth, but not enough as the Bloodhounds took two of three for the second week in a row against conference opponents.
The Bloodhounds pounded out 12 hits and got three hits apiece from Chris Nastasi (Bayville, NY / IMG Academy) and Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY / Mt. St. Michael’s). Nastasi added three RBI, while Guzman scored twice.
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Boys) picked up the win after going 5 2/3 innings and allowing seven runs (five earned) and striking out 11. Enmanuel Rodriguez (Manhattan, NY / Manchester) picked up the save after holding Lehman in the ninth inning.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Apr. 8 for a home game against St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn at 3:30 p.m.
