Staten Island, N.Y. – The John Jay softball season came to an end on Friday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the College of Staten Island, losing to the Dolphins, 6-4, in the first elimination game of the 2008 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) softball championship. John Jay’s season ends at 12-23 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

After finding themselves locked into a scoreless tie after two innings, the Bloodhounds drew first blood with a run in the top of the third inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY / Lehman) led off the frame with a double to left field. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and moments later another wild pitch drove her home from third.

John Jay increased its lead in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Alyce Miraglia (Lindenwood, NY / Stella Maris) reached on a fielder’s choice to move Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY / Newtown) from second to third. Lam then scored on a throwing error by the Staten Island catcher to give the Bloodhounds a 2-0 edge. John Jay then capped the inning on an RBI single up the middle by Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter’s Girls) that scored Miraglia.

But John Jay’s lead was short lived after that. The Dolphins muscled back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead and Staten Island would never trail again. CSI got another run in the bottom of the fifth to double up the advantage and took the 6-3 lead into the last inning,

After the first two Bloodhounds were retired to start the inning, Nina Chao (Woodside, NY / Bryant) blasted a two out solo homerun down the leftfield line to edge the Bloodhounds closer. But Staten Island got the final out of the inning to hold on and preserve the win.

Lam started the contest for John Jay and pitched three innings and allowed four runs on two hits and struck out one. Dayna Navatta (College Point, NY / Bayside) completed the final three innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with one strikeout.
