Maspeth, N.Y.— The John Jay men’s soccer team lost its 2008 home opener this afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated by New Jersey City University (NJCU) 3-1 at the Metropolitan Oval. John Jay now stands at 1-4-0 this season, while NJCU improves to 3-2-0 overall.
The visiting Gothic Knights, ranked ninth in the Metro Region, took the lead with just over 16 minutes gone by on an own goal. John Jay freshman defender Bryan Kassebaum (Valley Stream, NY / Kellenberg Memorial) attempted to clear a cross from in front of the net before the ball slipped off the side of his foot and rolled into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 for most of the first half in what was generally a neutral zone match up. The underdog Bloodhounds took the match right to the Gothic Knights who defeated John Jay 9-0 last season.
NJCU scored once more in the final minute of the first half on a direct kick off the foot of NJCU midfielder Jonathan Bilbao (Carteret, NJ / St. Benedict’s) as the Gothic Knights went into halftime up 2-0.
At halftime NJCU had outshot the Bloodhounds 5-2 and both teams had one corner kick apiece.
The offense opened a bit in the second half with neither team scoring through the first 35 plus minutes of second stanza. But NJCU went up by a trio in the 83rd minute on a goal by Carlos Moron (Harrison, NJ / Harrison) who made an incredible play by splitting the John Jay defense and ripped a shot past John Jay freshman goalkeeper Chris Adao (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) who made seven saves on the afternoon.
The Bloodhounds got on the board in the final minute of play on a clean goal by Henrique Avellar (Goiania, Brazil / Julia Richmond), his second goal of the season. Avellar recorded a game-high five shots for John Jay.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Sept. 13 against SUNY Maritime, 2 p.m. at the Metropolitan Oval.
