Box Score
Maspeth, N.Y.— Four different Bloodhounds, including Christopher Tapia (Fresh Meadows, NY / Central Islip), Hiromi Karahashi (Kanagawa, Japan / St. Johnsbury), Andres Llanos (Cali, Colombia / Newtown) and Dimal Basha (Ferizag, Kosovo / Kuvendi I Arberit) scored a goal each in the final 20 minutes of action as the John Jay men’s soccer team came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat SUNY Maritime 4-3 at the Metropolitan Oval on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Bloodhounds improved to 2-4-0 on the season, while SUNY Maritime is 2-2-0.
The visiting Privateers got first run on the Bloodhounds in the first half by scoring a pair of goals before halftime. Nelson Mayer, who had a game-high 12 shots in the contest, connected on both goals in the opening stanza to establish control for SUNY Maritime.
The Privateers grabbed the lead with 31:31 gone by to take a 1-0 lead. Then the visitors established a cushion minutes 117 seconds later with a goal at 33:28 to go up by two and lead at halftime by that amount.
SUNY Maritime led despite the Bloodhounds controlling the contest in many statistical categories. John Jay outshot the Privateers 10-9 in the first half and attempted three corner kicks to SUNY Maritime’s one.
John Jay still found themselves trailing by a pair with just over 22 minutes to play when the Bloodhounds got on the board. Tapia found the back of the mesh at the 67:27 mark of the game to cut the deficit in half off a feed from Basha, who had a pair of assists to go along with his goal.
With just over two minutes gone by after the first goal, Basha connected with Karahashi on a play that appeared more like a three on zero fast break. From the near sideline Basha slipped a centering pass to Karahashi who scored for fun off of the helpless out of position Privateer keeper.
But the Bloodhounds were still not done, and they took the lead just before the 76th minute on a strike by Llanos, his first of the season, with the helper coming from Henrique Avellar (Guayaquil, Brazil / Julia Richmond).
The game was not far from over however; SUNY Maritime came back with another goal at 80:56 to tie the contest on a strike by Efosa Ogbeifun.
John Jay finally put the game away on Basha’s goal, the first of his career, with just under five minutes to play to give the Bloodhounds the win as they improved to 2-0-0 against Skyline conference rivals this season.
John Jay outshot the Privateers 25-20 in the contest, including 14-11 in shots on goal. The Bloodhounds attempted seven corner kicks to Maritime’s one. Avellar had six shots for the Bloodhounds, five of which were on goal, while Joseph Okon (Corona, NY / John Bowne) also attempted six shots.
Chris Adao (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) made eight saves in net for the Bloodhounds.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Sept. 17 for its 2008 conference opener against CCNY, 4 p.m. at Rutgers-Newark Stadium Complex.
