Men's Soccer Defeats Brooklyn 1-0, Extends Conference One Goal or Less Game Streak to 19 Games

Staten Island, N.Y.— Henrique Avellar ripped a goal past the Brooklyn goalkeeper in the 24th minute of action and it proved to be all the Bloodhounds would need as John Jay goalkeeper Chris Adao made nine saves, including several spectacular ones in the closing minutes, to secure his first collegiate shutout as John Jay defeated Brooklyn College, 1-0, at the Staten Island Soccer Complex on Saturday.
 
With the win the Bloodhounds improve to 3-7-0 (1-3-0) and it has now been 19 consecutive games that John Jay has played a game that was decided by one goal or less against a conference opponent, a streak that dates back to the 2006 season.
 
Avellar ripped the goal by creating his own shot on the left side of the field with 23:35 gone by to give the Bloodhounds a 1-0 advantage. It was Avellar’s third goal of the season.
 
The score remained in tact the rest of the way despite the multitude of shots fired in the contest. John Jay fired the ball 13 times and Brooklyn 14. Avellar offered five shots to up his conference leading total to 40.
 
Fellow teammate Joseph Okon had three shots and Dimal Basha had a pair in the contest. And the Bloodhounds took six corner kicks to Brooklyn’s three.
 
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Sept. 29 st FDU Florham at 7 p.m.
