Women’s Basketball Loses Close one at Home to Brooklyn

New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women's basketball team lost a close on at home on Wednesday evening as the Bloodhounds fell to Brooklyn College, 58-55, at the Doghouse.

John Jay, now 1-13 (0-5 CUNYAC), was led by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) with game highs 23 points and eight steals, while fellow teammate senior forward Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY, Central Islip) grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds. Brooklyn, now 11-3 (4-1 CUNYAC) had a team-high 21 points from Amber Gordon, while Justine O'Callahan had a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The host Bloodhounds led for the bulk of the first half. After Brooklyn took a lead in the opening moments of the contest, John Jay used an 8-0 run to turn a 7-4 Brooklyn lead into a 12-7 advantage for the Bloodhounds.

John Jay led by as much as 12 in the first half and took a 30-18 lead with 3:28 to go, capped on a bucket by Grice to complete another 8-0 spurt.

The Bloodhounds led again by a dozen (32-20) with 2:24 remaining, but the visiting Bridges closed out the stanza on an 8-1 run over the final two minutes to cut their deficit to five as the game went into halftime with John Jay leading 33-28.

Brooklyn opened the second half on a 6-0 run to complete a 14-1 spurt, including the first half ending, to take a 34-33 lead with 17:28 remaining, it was Brooklyn's first lead since early in the first half..

John Jay and Brooklyn went toe to toe the next several minutes with the lead changing hands five times over the final 20 minutes of basketball. 

The Bloodhounds took their final lead of the night at 8:52 to lead 44-43 on a put back by Ogunleye who had six offensive rebounds in the game.

But the Bridges went on a 7-1 run after that to take a 50-45 lead with 6:18 remaining. Brooklyn led again by five at 52-47 with 4:31 to play before John Jay countered back with a 5-0 run to tie the contest at 52 with 3:19 left.

But the Bloodhounds could not get over the hump and Brooklyn took a lead it would not relinquish and held on for the win.

John Jay had a chance to tie the contest on their final possession, but a three point attempt by Grice came up short as time expired.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 16 for a home contest against York College at 5 p.m.
