Women’s Basketball Downed by the College of Staten Island

New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women's basketball team was defeated on Wednesday as the Bloodhounds fell to the College of Staten Island, 78-52, at the Doghouse.

John Jay, now 1-15 (0-7 CUNYAC) had three players score in double figures and were led by Parker Griffin with team highs 14 points and 14 rebounds. Fellow teammates Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon)and Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) added 12 points apiece for the Bloodhounds, while Janina Jurewicz-Johnson (New York, NY, Beacon School) grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench.

The College of Staten Island, now 14-4 (7-0 CUNYAC) was led by Allie Shanahan with 22 points, while Megan Sullivan grabbed 14 rebounds to go along with nine points. Danielle McLaughlin scored 13 off the bench for CSI.

The visiting Dolphins outscored John Jay 29-8 in points off the bench and forced the Bloodhounds into 36 turnovers, to tie a season high for the Bloodhounds as CSI outscored John Jay 31-12 in points off turnovers.

CSI scored the first nine points of the contest to take a 9-0 lead in the early stages. But John Jay hung around and remained within single digits for much of the first half. With CSI leading 13-5 with 14:34 remaining, the Bloodhounds used a 7-2 run to pull to within three at 15-12 with 12:14 to go.

But John Jay would get no closer as the Dolphins gradually pulled away. Up 25-20, they went on an 8-0 run to take a 33-20 lead with 4:09 to play. The lead increased from there, Up by 11 (35-24) with 2:55 remaining, CSI went on a 12-0 run to close out the first half and take a 47-24 lead at halftime. McLaughlin connected on a three point field from about 40 feet out at the buzzer to put CSI up by 23.

CSI coasted from there in the second half maintaining a 20 plus point lead for much of the stanza. John Jay pulled to within 19 on two occasions, but never closer. The Bloodhounds trailed 62-43 with 8:20 play before CSI used an 8-2 run to take a 70-45 lead with just over six minutes remaining en route to the 26 point decision.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 23 for a home contest against New York City Tech at 5 p.m.
