New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women's basketball team lost a home conference match on Wednesday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Baruch College, 83-47, at the Doghouse.
John Jay, now 3-16 (1-8 CUNYAC), was led by
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) with 20 points and seven rebounds, while
Parker Griffin (New York, NY, Bishop Kearney) chipped in with seven points and nine rebounds.
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) added 10 points as the Bloodhounds two game winning streak was snapped.
Baruch College, now 14-5 (8-0 CUNYAC) had four players score in double figures including
Christine Kelly with a team-high 17, followed by
Karlee Whipple with 16,
Kalea Davis with 12 and Shadae Rice with 10.
Monique Salmon, who entered tonight's contest as the NCAA Division III leader in assists with 8.8, added 10 assists to go along with eight points.
The visiting Bearcats led from start to finish, en route to remaining undefeated in CUNYAC play. They opened the game scoring two easy baskets to take a 4-0 lead and then led 12-7 before quickly breaking the contest open.
Baruch went on a 22-2 run to turn the 12-7 lead into a 34-9 margin at the 6:37 mark capped off on a lay-up by Salmon.
The Bearcats continued to increase their lead and led 43-13 at halftime.
Baruch maintained a 20 plus point lead the entire second half. John Jay made a mild run midway through the stanza and trailed by 24 and was down 64-40 with 7:57 to go, capping a 10-0 run.
But that was as close as the Bloodhounds would get as Baruch answered with a 6-1 run to go up 29 before leading by as much as 38 in the final minute.
Baruch forced John Jay into 22 turnovers, while committing 14 of its own as the Bearcats held a 32-8 advantage on points off turnovers. Baruch held a 36-12 margin on points in the paint, 18-2 on fastbreak points and 20-7 on second chance points.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Feb. 2 for a home contest against Montclair State at 5 p.m.
