John Jay Women's Basketball Falls in Home Conference Match to CCNY

New York, N.Y. --- Playing in their first home and conference contest of the 2009 calendar year, the John Jay women's basketball team lost to the City College of New York (CCNY) as they fell to the Beavers, 55-48, at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.

John Jay is now 1-11 (0-3 CUNYAC), while CCNY is 7-4 (1-2 CUNYAC).

The Bloodhounds were paced by senior forward Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY, Central Islip) with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jessica Lirio knocked in 11 points, while Parker Griffin (New York, NY, Bishop Kearney) and Janina Jurewicz-Johnson (New York, NY, Beacon School) had double figures in rebounds with Griffin grabbing 13 and Jurewicz-Johnson, 10.

The visiting Beavers led from start to finish in the contest. CCNY raced out to a 15-4 lead midway through the first half.

But the feisty Bloodhounds, though never owning a lead, never went away either. And they rallied back with a 10-2 run to pull to within three at 17-14 with 6:34 to play.

CCNY used another run, a 12-4 spurt, to go back up by double figures and the Beavers took a 29-18 lead with 1:37 to go before going into halftime up 29-20.

CCNY held John Jay at arms length distance through the early stages of the second half. They led by as much as 11 and took a 45-34 lead with 9:08 to play.

John Jay still trailed by eight (48-40) with 3:38 to play before making another run at the lead. The Bloodhounds used a 6-0 run to pull to within two and trailed 48-46 with 1:41 to play capped off by a jumper in the paint by Lirio.

But CCNY held John Jay scoreless for the next three plus minutes outscoring the Bloodhounds 6-0 to take a 54-46 lead with fourteen seconds remaining and put the game out of reach.

CCNY was led by Anika Rivera with a game-high 19 points to go along with a half dozen steals, while Nadia Tijani added 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Rynae Rasley registered a game-high seven steals for CCNY.

John Jay held a 54-40 advantage in rebounding and outscored CCNY 26-16 on points in the paint. The Bloodhounds doubled up the Beavers 14-7 on second chance points.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 9 at Baruch College at 5:30 p.m.
