Women's Tennis Earns First Win of Season in 8-1 Win over Medgar Evers

Jamaica, N.Y.— The John Jay College of Criminal Justice women's tennis team earned their first win of the season on Friday afternoon as the Bloodhounds defeated conference foe Medgar Evers College, 8-1 at the York College Tennis Complex. The victory also marks the first career coaching win for first year head coach Natalija Subotic as John Jay athletics remains undefeated in the month of October.

“I'm very excited about my first win, I think the hard work has paid off, the girls were determined to win,” said Subotic. “After the first win there is always a sense of euphoria and I think it will carry on to the next week. We have some more matches next week and I think they will be really excited and hopefully get another win.”

The Bloodhounds opened play by sweeping doubles to take a 3-0 advantage. The duo of Ashley Marrero (Bronx, NY, Lehman) and Seidron Snipe (Bronx, NY, County Prep) teamed to an 8-0 win at first doubles, while Wilesca Belhomme (Brooklyn, NY, Tilden) and Yan Zheng (FuShan, China, HS for Duel Language & Asian Studies) won at second doubles by the same score. Jessica Rodriguez (Brooklyn, NY, Fashion) and Cynthia Molina (Bronx, NY, Aquinas)completed the sweep with a 9-8 victory at third doubles as John Jay took command.

Marrero at first singles and Snipe at second singles both earned 6-0, 6-0 wins, so to did Rodriguez at No. 6 singles. Zheng at No. 3 singles was a 6-0, 6-1 winner. Belhomme was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 4 singles to give John Jay an 8-0 lead en route to the 8-1 decision.

The win also marked the first career singles win for Zheng.

John Jay returns to action on Sunday Oct. 4 at Polytechnic University at noon.
