Men's Soccer Falls to York in 2009 Conference Finale

Maspeth, N.Y.— Playing in their final conference game of the 2009 season, the John Jay men's soccer team was defeated by York College at the Metropolitan Oval 1-0 on Wednesday. 

With the loss, John Jay, now 2-13-2 overall, end the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) season at 1-6-2 and will not qualify for the conference playoffs this season. 

The lone goal of tonight's contest came off the foot of York's Francisco Flores at the 16:53 marker of the first half in what was otherwise a neutral zone contest. 

John Jay outshot York 14-12, but the game saw seven shots on goal between the two teams combined, including four by York and three by John Jay. 

The Bloodhounds aggressive play led to 24 fouls compared to York's five. 

John Jay had a great chance to tie the game late in the contest and appeared to have registered the game tying goal when Kareem Roberts (St. Albans, NY, William Taft) put home a rebound with less than five minutes to play,. But as John Jay want into an exuberant celebration, an offsides call was made, wiping out the goal. 

Freshman Sebastian Hernandez (White Plains, NY, White Plains)put a shot on goal late in the closing moment that was denied by York goalkeeper Samer Abdel-Fattah who made three saves in the contest. 

Joseph Rahilly (Malverne, NY, Malverne) made three saves for John Jay, all in the second half. 

John Jay returns to action on Sat. Oct. 24 for a match against New York University at the Metropolitan Oval in the 2009 season finale at noon.
