Men’s Soccer Earns First Conference Victory with 1-0 Win over CSI

Staten Island, N.Y.— Kareem Roberts (St. Albans, NY, William Taft)registered John Jay's only goal of the game with a header shot at the 19:41 mark of the first half and it proved to be all the Bloodhounds would need as the John Jay men's soccer team defeated the College of Staten Island, 1-0, at the CSI Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, John Jay ends a 10-game winless streak and picks up their first conference win of the season; they are now 2-8-2 overall and 1-3-2 in City University of New York Athletic Conference play.

The win also marks the first shutout of the season for John Jay men's soccer as starting goalkeeper Joseph Rahilly (Malverne, NY, Malverne) made six saves, several of which were breakaways, to preserve the win, his first of the season.

John Jay outshot CSI 18-14 in total shots, including 12-6 in the first half. Steven Castillo (Maspeth, NY, Forest Hills) led the Bloodhounds with four shots in the contest, while Roberts and Kemar Brown (Kingston, Jamaica, Martin Van Buren) had three each. Brown also registered an assists in the contest.

The 10-game winless streak included a pair of ties (1-1 vs. CCNY on Sept. 16 and 1-1 against Brooklyn College on Sept. 26). John Jay's lone win this season prior to today was a 2-1 non conference win over SUNY Purchase in the season opener on Sept. 1.

With the 1-0 decision, John Jay men's soccer in 25 of its last 26 games against CUNYAC opponents has played to a tie, won by one goal or lost by one goal.

John Jay is back in action on Sat. Oct. 10 for a match against Hunter College, 7 p.m. on Randall's Island.
