Women’s Swimming Loses to Hunter in Home Opener

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's swimming team opened its 2009-10 home schedule with a loss on Tuesday evening as the Bloodhounds were defeated by defending conference champions, Hunter College, 54-41 at the John Jay Pool.

The loss leaves John Jay at 1-1 (1-1 CUNYAC), while Hunter is 2-1 (2-0 CUNYAC).

In the contest, the Bloodhounds picked up four wins. The Bloodhounds raced out to a 7-0 lead after the team of Nathalie Cuellar (New Rochelle, NY, New Rochelle) Rose Edelman (Garden City, NY, Garden City), Justyna Maksimiuk (Sunnyside, NY, Brooklyn Tech) and Kaili Insalaco (Ridgefield Park, NJ, Flagler Palm Coast) scored a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay (2:13.56).

After Hunter tied the score (8-8) after the second event, the Bloodhounds reclaimed the lead with another first place finish as Maksimiuk finished first in the 200 yard free relay (2:24.01) to give John Jay a 13-12 advantage.

But Hunter scored first place finishes in the next five events to take a comfortable lead and were ahead 47-23 after the eighth event.

The Bloodhounds sailed to a first place finish in the 500 yard freestyle as Insalaco cruised to victory (6:52.03) winning by more than 20 seconds.

Edelman then took first place in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:25.12).

With Hunter swimming as exhibition for the final event, the 200 yard free relay, the team of Billie Jean Kuppler (Long Island City, NY, Long Island City) Keshia Hacker (Brooklyn, NY, Murray Bergtraum), Amanda Garcia (Astoria, NY, St. John's Prep) and Jessica Tam (Brooklyn, NY, Fort Hamilton) teamed for a first place finish (2:16.14).

John Jay returns to action on Mon. Nov. 16 for a home meet against Lehman College at 6 p.m.
