Women's Swimming Tops College of Staten Island in 2009-10 Season Opener

Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay College of Criminal Justice women's swim team opened the 2009-10 season with a major splash as the Bloodhounds defeated the College of Staten Island 118-115 in Staten Island on Friday evening.

John Jay got great contributions from many swimmers. The Bloodhounds were winners in both relays (200 yard free relay and the 200 yard individual medley relay). In the 200 yard free relay the team of Billie Jean Kuppler (Long Island City, NY, Long Island City), Keshia Hacker (Brooklyn, NY, Murray Bergtraum), Amanda Garcia (Astoria, NY, St. John's Prep) and Jessica Tam (Brooklyn, NY, Fort Hamilton) teamed for a win, while in the 200 yard medley relay, Nathalie Cuellar (New Rochelle, NY, New Rochelle), Rose Edelman (Garden City, NY, Garden City), Johanna McLaughlin (New York, NY, Beacon School) and Kaili Insalaco (Ridgefield Park, NJ, Flagler Palm Coast) teamed for a first place finish.

Newcomer Justyna Maksimiuk (Sunnyside, NY, Brooklyn Tech) earned second place finishes in all three races including the 1000 yard freestyle (14:22), 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard butterfly (1:20.41).

Edelman, in addition to her first place finish in the medley relay, scored first place finishes in the 100 free and 100 yard breast.

John Jay returns to action on Tue. Nov. 10 for their 2009-10 home opener against Hunter College at 6 p.m.
