New York, N.Y.— The John Jay College women's basketball team was defeated at home on homecoming as the Bloodhounds lost to Lehman College 69-42 in front of a large crowd at the Doghouse on Thursday evening for homecoming.
John Jay (0-5, 0-2 CUNYAC) was led by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) with 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Fellow teammate Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) had nine points in the contest, while Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) chipped in with seven points to go along with a team-high 12 rebounds.
The visiting Lightning (2-3, 2-0 CUNYAC) never trailed in the contest and opened the game on a 10-4 spurt.
John Jay hung around in the early stages of the contest and, after falling behind by seven, moments later, used a 6-1 spark to pull to within two and John Jay trailed 16-14 with 9:16 to go capped on a jumper by Lirio.
The Bloodhounds were still within two points and trailed 18-16 with 7:29 left before Lehman used a 16-2 run to gain a comfortable lead as the Lightning went up 34-18 with 1:48 to go before going into halftime up 36-22.
John Jay was limited to five field goals made in the second half, and Lehman, leading by 40-25 with under two minutes gone by, went on a 14-0 run to go up by 29 as the Lightning led 54-25 with 11:34 to go.
Lehman led by as much as 33 in the second half before the 27-point win.
Lehman was led by Dorothy Hunte with game-highs 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Kelsey Ash had 11 points for the Lightning.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Dec. 5 for a home game against Rowan University at 1 p.m.
