Women's Basketball Falls at Hunter

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team lost on the road in its final regular season game of the year as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Hunter College, 62-54 at the Hunter Sportsplex on Friday evening. The Bloodhounds have been virtually eliminated from playoff contention regardless of the outcomes of Saturday's action.

John Jay, 5-20 (3-10) for the second year in a row, was led by Parker Griffin (New York, NY, Bishop Kearney) with 16 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) had 15 points and 10 boards. Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY, Central Islip)added eight points and had 13 rebounds.

The Bloodhounds outscored Hunter 36-28 on points in the paint, while holding a 20-16 advantage on second chance points.

The game was hotly contested from the start as both teams traded baskets early in the affair.

But the Bloodhounds wrestled the lead away in the latter stages of the first half and led by as much as seven in the opening stanza. Trailing 10-8, John Jay used a 10-2 run to take an 18-12 lead with 7:27 to go.

The Bloodhounds' led the rest of the first half while trading baskets with the host Hawks during the latter stages of the first half. The Bloodhounds took a seven point lead and led 25-17 with fifty second remaining in the opening stanza on a jumper by Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy).

Hunter closed out the final minute of the first half on a 4-0 spurt to pull to within four as John Jay went into halftime up 25-21.

John Jay scored the first field goal of the second half to go back up by a half dozen. But Hunter proceeded with a 5-0 run to pull to within one and the Hawks trailed 27-26 with 18:58 to play.

John Jay and Hunter countered each other over the next several minutes as both teams exchanged baskets. The Bloodhounds went up by three on two occasions, only for Hunter to counter.

But on the third consecutive three point lead, the Bloodhounds scored again on a Griffin jumper to give John Jay a 35-30 lead with 14:53 remaining.

Hunter then answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 35-35 with 13:51 left.

But the Bloodhounds reclaimed the lead at 37-35, before John Jay went back up by a deuce and led 39-37 with 9:01 to play.

Hunter then grabbed its first lead of the second half on a three point field goal by Megan McKenna with 8:37 to give the Hawks a 40-39 advantage.

The Bloodhounds took a 41-40 lead on the next possession, but Hunter used a 6-0 run to take a 46-41 lead.

Hunter maintained the lead throughout the rest of the contest. John Jay pulled to within one and were down 53-52 with 1:25 to go after on another field goal by Griffin.

But Hunter went on a 7-0 run down the stretch to gain a 60-52 advantage with seventeen seconds left to put the game out of reach.
