Women’s Basketball Falls in Final Home Conference Game Against Lehman

New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women's basketball team wrapped up its conference home schedule on Wednesday with a loss as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Lehman College 76-52 at the Doghouse.

John Jay, now 3-18 (1-9 CUNYAC), were led by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon)with a game-high 25 points and team-high three steals, while Parker Griffin (New York, NY, Bishop Kearney) chipped in with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Lehman had four players score in double-figures and were led by Sally Nnanani with 19 points, followed by Kelsey Ash with 17, Tonisha Kirby with 13 and Barbara Febus with 12. Monique Sampson knocked in eight points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and swiped a game-high nine steals for Lehman.

The Bloodhounds committed 37 turnovers in the contest as Lehman outscored John Jay 37-14 in points off turnovers.

John Jay went toe to toe with the visiting Lightning in the opening stages. The first half saw five ties and five lead changes. But Lightning took the lead for good with 4:20 remaining in the first half to break an 18-18 tie on a three point field goal by Ash, who went 6 for 16 from the field, including 5 for 13 from behind the three point arc.

The basket came in the middle of a 10-0 Lehman run which was capped with 2:16 to play on a Kirby jumper to give the Lightning a 26-18 lead.

John Jay managed to pull to within three with a 5-0 run courtesy of back to back field goals by Grice. The run cut the Lehman lead to 26-23 with thirty eight seconds to go before halftime as Lehman was up 28-24 at the break.

But Lehman made a sweeping run in the second half to break open what was a close game. The Lightning outscored the Bloodhounds 48-28 over the final twenty minutes and shot 48.8 percent from the field after connecting on just 23.7 percent in the first half (36.7 percent total).

The Lightning opened the second half with a 17-3 run to take a 47-29 lead with 14:06 remaining.

John Jay never pulled to within less than 16 after that.

The Bloodhounds out-rebounded the Lightning 55-45 and got eight rebounds from Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy) and seven each from Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY, Central Islip) and Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas). Lirio also chipped in with a game-high six assists for John Jay.

John Jay returns to action on Sat. Feb. 7 at the City College of New York at 2 p.m.
