Women's Basketball Holds off CCNY, Stays Alive in Playoff Hunt

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team led from start to finish and picked up a much needed win as their quest to make the playoffs continue as the Bloodhounds defeated the City College of New York (CCNY), 52-49, at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Saturday.

John Jay is now 4-18 (2-9 CUNYAC) and have moved to within one game of a playoff spot in conference with two CUNYAC games remaining.

The Bloodhounds were led by Parker Griffin (New York, NY, Bishop Kearney) who had a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) had a game-high 15 points. Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) knocked in 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

John Jay, who never trailed in the contest, took a big lead from the opening tap. They raced out on a 12-4 run to take an eight point lead to start. The lead shrunk to as little as three, but CCNY never got closer. John Jay led by as much as nine in the first half and the Bloodhounds led 20-11 with 8: 13 to play on a jumper by Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy).

The host Beavers pulled back to within as little as three and were down 20-17, capping a 6-0 run with 2:45 remaining. But the Bloodhounds raced away again with a 4-0 spurt and led 24-17 at halftime.

John Jay opened the second half on a 16-5 run to take a 41-26 lead, their biggest lead of the night, with 11:51 remaining.

The Bloodhounds held on down the stretch as CCNY chipped away at the lead in the final 10 minutes. Still down 10 at 51-41 with 1:38 remaining, the Beavers closed out the game on an 8-1 run to pull to within three. But CCNY ran out of time as the Bloodhounds earned their first road win of the season.
