Port Charlotte, Fla.— The John Jay baseball team opened its week of games in Florida with a loss on Sunday morning as the Bloodhounds were defeated by nationally ranked Heidelberg College, 22-0.
The Student Princes, ranked eighth nationally in Division III according to the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, got nine unearned runs in the top of the first inning after several John Jay miscues to start the contest.
Heidelberg then scored at least one run in the first six innings and led 20-0 after six full.
John Jay had nine hits in the game including multiple hits from
Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum),
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) and
Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's) who recorded two each. Guzman was 2 for 2, while Hernandez and Massoni were 2 for 4.
The Bloodhounds had a chance to have a big inning in the bottom of the fifth.
Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing)led off the inning with a single.
Steven Roman (Middletown, NY, Chapel Field Christian) followed by reaching on a fielder's choice. But a throwing error by the Heidelberg first baseman allowed Abad to make it to second safely. Then a wild pitch to the next batter moved them up a base each with nobody out.
But Heidelberg starting pitcher,
David Paddock retired the side in order to preserve the shutout. Paddock went 8.0 innings and allowed no runs on nine hits and struck out 11 en route to picking up the win.
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) suffered the loss for John Jay going one inning and allowing nine runs (none earned) on six hits.
Heidelberg's
Matt Grassley went 4 for 5 with three doubles, three runs and three RBI.
The two schools will meet again on Monday at 1:30 p.m. But John Jay's first of two games tomorrow is against Muskingum College at 9 a.m.
