Madison, N.J. — The John Jay baseball team lost its first one run game of the season as the Bloodhounds fell on the road, losing 8-7 at Drew University on Wednesday.
After falling behind by three runs after one inning, John Jay came right back and tied the contest with a trio of runs in the second inning. Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel) ripped a double to score Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) for their first run of the game. Two batters later, the Bloodhounds tied the game when Ronald Baez recorded a single to drive in Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing) and Beiro.
Drew reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the second with a run, but once again John Jay answered. Starting pitcher John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys)scored on an error by Drew for the second tie of the game.
The host Rangers took the lead again in the bottom of the third and Drew led 5-4 after three innings. The Bloodhounds tied the game in the top of the fifth with another run. Massoni scored for the second time in the game after an RBI single by Baez, who was 2-for-4 with three runs.
But Drew took the lead for good with two in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the bottom of the sixth to go up 8-5.
John Jay scored two runs in the top of the seventh to pull to within a run, but never over. An RBI single by Steven Roman (Middletown, NY, Chapel Field Christian) and a sacrifice fly by Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum)platted John Jay two runs. But with two outs and runners on first and third, the Bloodhounds, who left 12 runners on base, failed to bring home the tying and go ahead runs.
The Bloodhounds had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth before the next two batters were retired. John Jay then went quietly in the ninth to end the game.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Mar. 21 at Mitchell College for the conference opener, a doubleheader starting at noon.
