Old Westbury, N.Y. — The John Jay baseball team was defeated on the road Tuesday as they lost at SUNY Old Westbury, 14-10, at Jackie Robinson Field.
With the loss, the Bloodhounds are 3-13 on the season.
John Jay recorded a season-high 16 hits in the game and had multiple hit games from five players.
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) was 4-for-5 with a triple, three runs and two RBI, while
Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) was 3-for-6 and
Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing) was 3-for-3 with three RBI.
James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY, IMG Academy)and
Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp)had two hits apiece.
The Bloodhounds got first run in the contest, putting up a four spot to take a 4-0 lead after a half inning of play. Witten, who also scored three times and had two RBI, ripped a single up the middle to score Hernandez and Podlucky. Later in the inning, Witten crossed home plate on an RBI single by Abad. Perez, who reached base five times in the contest, scored an unearned run in the inning after scoring on a single to right field by
Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's).
The host Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the second before the Bloodhounds countered with a run in the top of the third to go up 5-1.
But SUNY Old Westbury rallied back with seven runs in the bottom of the third to go up 8-5 after three innings and the Panthers never trailed in the high scoring affair again.
The Bloodhounds narrowed the gap with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to pull to within a run on RBI hits by Perez and Abad, but never tied it.
The Panthers widened the lead in the bottom of the sixth with five runs to go up 13-7 and John Jay never got to within less than four runs of the lead.
John Jay scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but also left the bases loaded as Old Westbury averted further damage. The Bloodhounds platted a run in the eighth, but left a pair of runners on during the inning. John Jay left 11 runners stranded in the contest. They went 1-for-5 with the bases loaded, while leading off six of the nine innings with a base hit.
Podlucky started on the mound and picks up the loss after going three innings and allowing eight runs on 10 hits.
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Mar. 26 for a home contest against Ramapo at 3:30 p.m.
