Men's Tennis Opens 2009 Season with Big Win over Western Connecticut State

Box Score Danbury, Conn.— The John Jay men's tennis team opened their 2009 season with a big effort and came away with a lopsided win on Friday as the Bloodhounds defeated Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) 8-1.

Dong Shao (Flushing, NY, Patchogue-Medford) was a winner in first singles (7-5, 7-5), while Josh Pagan (Douglaston, NY, Benjamin Cardozo) was a winner at second singles (6-2, 6-4). Derrick Chung (San Diego, CA, Rancho Buena Vista) was a winner in third singles (6-2, 6-0) and Matt Hicks (Queens Village, NY, Benjamin Cardozo) won at fourth singles (6-1, 6-0). At No. 5 singles, James Sun (New York, NY, Francis Lewis)was a winner (7-5, 6-3) and at No. 6 Tim Smith (Poughkeepsie, NY, Our Lady of Lourdes) was a winner (6-1, 6-2).

At doubles play, John Jay won at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 2, Chung and Hicks won 8-2, and at No. 3, Sun and Smith won 8-3.

John Jay men's tennis returns to action on Sun. Mar. 29 for a match at the National Tennis Center against St. Joseph's-Patchogue at noon.
