Brooklyn, N.Y. — The John Jay baseball team lost a pair of games to Baruch College on Saturday afternoon at Legion Field as the Bloodhounds were defeated 5-3 in both games of the doubleheader. John Jay was defeated in 10 innings in game one before losing the second game by the same score.

With the losses, John Jay is now 3-15 (2-2 CUNYAC) this season, while Baruch College is 7-5 (2-0 CUNYAC).

In the first game, which started 30 minutes late because of unplayable field conditions caused by the overnight precipitation, the visiting Bearcats took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first.

The Bloodhounds cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY, IMG Academy)that scored Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart)who was hit by the pitch to get the inning started.

But Baruch went back up by two in the top of the fifth with a run to give the Bearcats a 3-1 lead.

John Jay came back and tied the score in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs. John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys)slipped a triple to leftfield that scored Podlucky, who was who was 2-for-4, from second. The next batter Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) hit a single to leftfield to score Massoni and suddenly the Bloodhounds were tied 3-3 with nobody out.

But John Jay, who left 11 runners on base, went on to leave the bases loaded in the sixth as Baruch escaped without further damage.

Both teams went toe to toe until the tenth inning as the Bearcats got two more runs in the frame to go up 5-3 and win the contest.

John Jay did not go quietly though. They got the first two runners on base with the winning run to coming to the plate with nobody out. But a failed sacrifice attempt, followed by two routine outs ended John Jay's comeback.

Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp)pitched a solid game going eight innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, walked one and fanned 12 en route to a no decision. Massoni suffers the loss in relief after going two innings and allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

In the second game, Baruch again got two runs across in the top of the first to go up 2-0.

John Jay cut the lead by 50 percent with a run in the bottom of the first after leadoff batter, Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum), scored on a wild pitch. John Jay started the inning by loading the bases with nobody out. But two of the next three batters proceeded to strikeout allowing Baruch to avert the potential disaster.

The Bloodhounds tied the contest in the bottom of the third with another run on an RBI single up the middle by Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing) that scored Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center)

But Baruch doubled the lead and went up 4-2 with a pair of runs on a bases clearing double with one out.

John Jay scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on a double to left-center by Hernandez that scored Jason Witten.

But John Jay, who left 12 runners on base in the night cap (23 total on the day), left the bases saturated in the sixth inning. The Bloodhounds appeared to be on the verge of taking the lead in the sixth. But a lined shot by Podlucky was snagged by the Bearcats third baseman who dove fully extended to make a spectacular catch to inevitably save the game for Baruch.

The Bearcats got a run in the top of the seventh to go back up by a pair. John Jay, who failed to score in the last inning, had runners on first and second with one out, but a strikeout and a foul out ended the game as Baruch swept John Jay in a doubleheader for the first time since the 2005 season.

Massoni suffered the loss after going six innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts.

John Jay returns to action on Sun. Mar. 29 for a single game against Baruch College at noon at Westchester Community College.
