Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The John Jay baseball lost a non conference affair on Tuesday evening as the Bloodhounds fell to Rutgers University-Camden, 18-5.
The Scarlet Raptors raised their record to 6-13 with their second straight win as they scored their most runs since a 19-9 win over Ramapo College in the opener of a doubleheader April 1, 2006.
The Bloodhounds fall to 3-16.
Rutgers-Camden collected 22 hits off of four John Jay pitchers as 13 Scarlet Raptors joined the hit parade. Hunt went 4-for-5 with one run and two RBIs, collecting three-quarters of a cycle. He had everything except a home run, and he finished the day with seven total bases.
Ballay went 2-for-5 with three runs and five RBIs, including a two-run double in the sixth.
Senior second baseman
Dean Straga and freshman third baseman
Joey Merlino each added three hits. Merlino scored four times and added a stolen base, while Straga had one run and one RBI.
The Scarlet Raptors took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, opening the frame with four straight hits. Freshman designated hitter
John Santilli reached on an infield single and scored on a triple by junior right fielder
Steve Myers. Ballay singled home Myers. Only a caught stealing prevented a bigger inning, as Hunt followed with a double.
Rutgers-Camden ran its way to a couple more runs in the second after the Bloodhounds left the bases loaded in the top of the frame. Merlino hit a leadoff single up the middle, stole second, advanced on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. Ballay drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a single by Hunt, his second hit in as many innings.
The Scarlet Raptors scored at least one run in every inning, providing more than enough support for freshman right-hander
Brett Winder who earned his first collegiate win. Winder (1-0), the first of four Raptor pitchers, worked six innings of four-hit ball, walking five and striking out six. He allowed three runs, two earned.
Junior shortstop
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center)had two of the five hits for the Bloodhounds, going 2-for-2 with one run and two RBIs.
Freshman hurler
James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY, IMG Academy)started the game for John Jay and took the loss, working three innings and allowing eight hits and six earned runs. Podlucky (0-2) walked five and didn't strike out a batter.
John Jay returns to action Wednesday, facing another New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent on the road. The Bloodhounds play a 3:30 p.m. game at Montclair State University.
The Scarlet Raptors return to NJAC play on Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. game in Pomona against Richard Stockton College.
