Game 1
Game 2 (NOT COMPLETE)
Brooklyn, N.Y. – The John Jay softball team lost the first game of a doubleheader, 8-4, to conference foe Baruch College, before averting a mercy rule contest in the second game which was halted due to darkness with the Bloodhounds losing 10-7 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
John Jay trailed going into the bottom of the sixth 10-2 in the second game and needing at least one run to keep the game alive. The Bloodhounds had two outs and nobody on, before a two out rally kept the game alive.
Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY, Bronx Leadership Academy), who was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and was at the plate when the game was halted, hit a slow roller to third to keep the inning alive. The next batter,
Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY, Lehman) ripped a double to left to score Nunez and keep the game alive.
The Bloodhounds then cleared the bases with one swing of the bat courtesy of
Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison), 2-for-3, who belted a shot to right center and suddenly the Bloodhounds were down 10-5.
Then after Baruch went quietly in the seventh, John Jay gathered another two out rally in the bottom half to cut into the lead further.
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls), who was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI singled home
Krystal Class, 2-for-4. John Jay got another run when Bonici scored on a throwing error by Baruch before the game was called at 7:31 p.m. as darkness had set in.
The Bloodhounds had 10 hits.
Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant) stands as the pitcher of record if the Bloodhounds do not come back. She went 5.1 innings and allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits.
Kim Bifulco came on in relief and has pitched 1.2 scoreless innings allowing one hit.
In the opening game, John Jay fell behind 2-0 early, before scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
The latter three runs came off the bat of Chao who smacked a three run homer to straightaway centerfield for her team leading second homerun of the season.
But Baruch came back with three runs in the top of the fifth, one in the sixth and two In the seventh en route to an 8-4 decision.
Chao was 3-for-3 in the opener and had two doubles to go along with her long ball. Pena and Bonici had two hits apiece in game one.
