Port Charlotte, Fla.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated by John Carroll Univ. 19-1 at the Snowbird Classic on Wednesday.
The Bloodhounds, now 0-6 on the season and 0-5 on the spring trip were out hit 19-6. Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum)was the lone Bloodhound to register a multiple hit game. He went 2-for-3 with a double and a run.
John Carroll scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. But John Jay countered right back with a run to tie the score. Hernandez, who led off the inning with a single through the left side, scored an unearned run on an RBI single by John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys). After Hernandez got on base, he advanced to third after an error on the John Carroll starting pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt.
But the Blue Streaks scored three runs in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead and John Carroll increased its lead to the end.
The Bloodhounds' best chance to cut into the lead came in the bottom of the fourth inning. With John Carroll leading 5-1 catcher Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's), designated hitter Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) and shortstop Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) led off with a single each to load the bases with nobody out. But the Blue Streaks' hurler proceeded to strikeout the next two batters and get the next batter to groundout to shortstop to get out of the jam with no damage.
Ronald Baez (Brooklyn, NY, Washington Irving) started on the mound and went 5.0 innings and allowed 11 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked four.
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Mar. 6 at 11 a.m.
