John Jay Softball Lose a Pair of Hard Fought Games

Virginia Beach, Va.— The John Jay softball team opened its 2009 season on Friday with a pair of losses at the Beach Blast tournament hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College as the Bloodhounds lost to Albright College 8-7 in the opener before falling 5-3 to Franklin & Marshall College in the latter game.

In the first game of the day, John Jay, playing outdoors for the first time this season, made six errors in the contest resulting in six of Albright's eight runs to be unearned.

The Lions put up two in the bottom of the first to take an early advantage.

The Bloodhounds got a run back in the top of the second to cut the deficit in half. Designated player, Christina Perez led off the inning by reaching first base on an error by the Albright pitcher. She later scored on an RBI single by Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY, DeWitt Clinton).

John Jay then tied the contest in the next inning when Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) scored from third on a passed ball.

But the Lions responded with three unearned runs in the bottom half of the frame to reclaim the lead and Alright never trailed again.

John Jay put up another run in the fourth on another passed ball by the Albright hurler as Alyce Miraglia (Lindenwood, NY, Stella Maris) raced home from third.

Albright added three more runs in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead after five.

But the Bloodhounds did not go away. They countered with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth to pull back to within a pair of runs. A groundout to shortstop by Bonici scored Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) who reached first base with a walk. The next batter, Nina Chao scorched a double to left center to clear the bases as Miraglia and Krystal Class (Brooklyn, NY, New Utrecht) dashed home.

John Jay got one more run in the top of the seventh. After Perez walked to lead off the inning, Cassandra Velez (Gaithersburg, MD, Gaithersburg) entered as a pinch runner. She stole second and later went to third on a wild pitch. She scored from third with one out after Gomez reached first on an Albright error to make the score 8-7.

But the Bloodhounds could not get the tying run home as the Bloodhounds lost the opener.

John Jay out hit the Lions 8-5 and got two hits from Miraglia who was 2-for-4.

Lam suffered the loss after pitching six innings and allowing eight runs (two earned) on five hits. She struck out two batters.

Against Franklin & Marshall, the Diplomats scored three runs in the top of the first to go up early.

But the lead was short lived as the Bloodhounds countered in the bottom of the first with one whopping swing of the bat from Chao. She blasted a three run shot to score Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy), who led off with a walk, and Bonici who also walked.

Franklin & Marshall got a run back in the top of the second and it proved to be the game winner as the Bloodhounds were no hit by the Diplomats' ace and were limited to two base runners the remainder of the game. John Jay's last 14 batters were retired in order.

The Diplomats added one more run in the fourth to close out the scoring.

The contest saw five hits, including two for John Jay and three for Franklin & Marshall.

John Jay committed four miscues resulting in four of Franklin & Marshall's five runs to be unearned.

Chao suffered the loss aftering going seven innings and allowed five runs (just one earned) on three hits with four strikeouts.

Arlene Pena (Bronx, NY, Lehman) got John Jay's other hit in the second game.
