Box Score 2 vs. Bluffton
vs. Wilmington
Port Charlotte, Fla.— The John Jay baseball team lost a pair of games on Saturday at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte. The Bloodhounds were defeated by Bluffton College 14-3 in the first game of the day and were defeated by Wilmington College 8-2 in the second contest.
In the first game of the day, the Bloodhounds fell behind 5-0 and were down by that score going into the bottom of the third inning when John Jay got on the board.
The Bloodhounds plated three runs in the frame to pull to within two runs and John Jay trailed 5-3.
John Massoni reached on an error by the Bluffton third baseman that scored Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY, Murry Bergtraum) from third base. Moments later James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY, IMG Academy) scored on a groundout by Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY, Mt. St. Michael's). Then the Bloodhounds rounded out the third inning scoring on an RBI single by Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) that scored Massoni.
But Bluffton answered with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to go up 9-3 after four and a half innings.
The Beavers out hit the Bloodhounds 17-7 in the contest. Hernandez was 4-for-5 with a run in the contest.
Ronald Baez (Brooklyn, NY, Washington Irving) suffered the loss for John Jay. He went 2.0 innings and allowed five runs on five hits.
Against Wilmington College, the Bloodhounds took their first lead of the week with a run in the top of the first inning. Witten ripped a single to leftfield that scored Hernandez who led off the game by getting hit by the pitch.
The Quakers tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, but John Jay reclaimed the lead in the second with another run as Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel), who led off the inning with a single, scored moments later on an RBI single by Podlucky.
Wilmington College tied the game in the bottom of the second and took the lead in the third with a pair of runs.
The Quakers increased the lead gradually en route to an 8-2 final.
“We are hitting the ball very hard now. Unfortunately today many of the shots were hit at the players,” said head coach Dan Palumbo. “But we made some great progress this week and I am extremely confident we will turn it around as the season progresses.”
Michael Colletta picked up the loss after allowing seven runs (two earned) on 10 hits over seven innings. He fanned four batters.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Mar. 11 for a home game against SUNY Purchase at 3:30 p.m.
