Virginia Beach, Va. – The John Jay softball team lost a pair of softball games during day two of the Virginia Beach Blast tournament. The Bloodhounds were defeated by Frostburg State, 17-4, before falling to Arcadia University, 9-1, in the second game.
In the opener, John Jay took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Nina Chao (Woodside, NY, W.C. Bryant)ripped a two out single to center field to drive in Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) who doubled to right center to start the inning.
But Frostburg State got eight runs across in the top of the second to take an 8-1 lead. Frostburg State then platted two more runs in the top of the third and the Bobcats had a 10-1 lead. The Bloodhounds got a run back in the bottom of the third on another two out single, this one by Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) to drive home Briggitte Martinez (New York, NY, Health Professions) who led off the inning on an error.
But that would be as close as John Jay got the rest of the way. The Bobcats added on three more runs in the top of the fourth and four more in the top of the fifth to go up 17-2.
The Bloodhounds mounted a mid rally in the top of the fifth and scored two more unearned runs, again with two outs. Vega scored her second run of the game on an RBI double by Chao, her second RBI of the contest. Moments later Chao would score on an error in right field by the Frostburg State right fielder.
But the game ended after the fifth inning as per the NCAA eight run fifth inning mercy rule.
John Jay pounded out eight hits as Chao and Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY, Bronx Leadership Academy) were 2 for 3.
Chao suffered the loss pitching 5.0 innings allowing 13 runs on 17 hits.
Against Arcadia the Bloodhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by Christina Perez (Brooklyn, NY, James Madison)that scored Chao, who led off the inning with a single.
But that was the only run the Bloodhounds platted across. Arcadia scored three in the bottom of the second, two in the third and four in the fourth and led 9-1 after the fourth.
John Jay got the lead runner on in the top of the fifth, but could not get a run across as the game ended after the top of the fifth.
Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) suffered the loss going four innings and allowing nine runs (five earned) on 10 hits.
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Mar. 26 at Stockton College for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
