Game 2
Brooklyn, N.Y. — Senior ace pitchers (and Staten Island natives),
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) and
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) combined to allow one run in 14 innings as the Bloodhounds swept the Dolphins at Legion Field. They defeated the Dolphins 2-1 in eight innings in game one before downing CSI 5-0 in game two. Fellow pitcher,
Johan Abad (Corona, NY, Flushing), also pitched an inning of scoreless baseball and delivered game-winning hits in both contests offensively.
In the opener, Colletta went eight innings to earn the win after allowing one run on five hits while striking out six. John Jay took an early lead with a run in the first on a single up the middle by
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) to score
James Podlucky (Staten Island, NY, IMG Academy) who doubled to left to get on base.
The score remained 1-0 until the seventh as John Jay ended the scoring drought in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and nobody on.
Jason Witten (Staten Island, NY, New Dorp) drew a two out walk then Abad delivered the game winner by ripping a double to right center to easily score Witten from first to seal game one.
CSI's
Jon Reyes suffered the loss after going 7.2 innings and allowing two runs on nine hits, while fanning six batters. Podlucky and Witten both went two-for-three in the game.
In game two another pitcher's duel percolated with both teams not allowing a run through the first five innings of play.
Massoni went six innings and allowed no runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Meanwhile, CSI's
James Mardikos matched the John Jay southpaw to maintain the scoreless affair.
John Jay caught up with Mardikos in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs to make the score 5-0. The Bloodhounds orchestrated a one-out rally in the frame with four consecutive players reaching base and scoring. The rally began when Perez singled to left, followed by Witten being hit by a pitch. Then Abad, for the second game in a row, delivered an RBI that would prove to be the game winner with a shot up the middle to score Perez and put John Jay on top 1-0. The Bloodhounds were not done as
Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel) laced a single to center to drive home Witten. Then, with two out and the bases loaded,
Edwin Hernandez landed a single to right to bring in Abad and Beiro. Podlucky ripped another single for good measures to drive in
Steven Kendrick (Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart), who reached base with a two out walk.
Abad came in relief to cap off a heroic day with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to solidify the sweep as John Jay is now 6-2 in CUNYAC play. Abad finished the day going five-for-seven and two game-winning RBI with one double.
Both teams return to action tomorrow (Saturday) with a single non conference game at CSI starting at noon.
