Men's Tennis Loses to College of Staten Island

Box Score Flushing, N.Y. – The John Jay tennis program (3-3) suffered an 8-1 loss to the College of Staten Island (5-4) in a match at the National Tennis Center.

John Jay lost 7-9 and 6-8 respectively at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, in matches that could have went either way. The Bloodhounds also lost at No. 1 doubles 8-1.

John Jay played well in all six singles and picked up wins in the opening sets of Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6. Josh Pagan (Douglaston, NY, Benjamin Cardozo) was John Jay's lone winner of the day, while remaining undefeated this season (5-0). He was victorious 6-3, 6-2. Top flight player Dong Shao (Flushing, NY, Patchogue-Medford) lost a hard fought 2-6, 2-6 match at No. 1 singles to undefeated Konstantine Trofomovich.

Up early in both sets, No. 3 Derrick Chung (San Diego, CA, Rancho Buena Vista), while playing through pain, succumbed 3-6, 4-6 defeat. Matt Hicks (Queens Village, NY, Benjamin Cardozo) lost a close one at No. 4 singles 7-6, 6-1. No. 5 seed, Jonathan Cedeno (Guayaquil, Ecuador, Long Island City) won the first set 6-3 before falling 6-3, 6-4 in the latter sets. And at No. 6 Tim Smith (Poughkeepsie, NY, Our Lady of Lourdes) split the first two sets before falling in a 10-5 tie breaker.

John Jay returns to action on Tue. Apr. 14 for a home match against Baruch College at 3:30 p.m.
