Softball Overpowers College of New Rochelle, Winners of Eight Straight Now

New Rochelle, N.Y. – Before their big showdown with conference rival Hunter College on Tuesday in what could be a battle for the regular season City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) title, the John Jay softball team made quick work of the College of New Rochelle as they swept the Blue Angels in a doubleheader, 27-0 and 26-1 on Monday afternoon. With the win the Bloodhounds improve to 9-11 overall and are winners of eight in a row.

In the first game, every player on the roster who saw action had at least one RBI, while 10 players had more than one hit.

The Bloodhounds high powered offense was ignited by pitcher Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY, Newtown) who went 4-for-6 with a run and four RBI. But the sophomore was also dominating on the mound as she twirled a no hitter in the five inning mercy rule shortened game.

Leadoff batter, Nelly Vega (Bronx, NY, In-Tech Academy) also recorded four RBI in the contest while going 3-for-4 with two runs.

The Bloodhounds scored 14 runs in the top of the first inning and were never threatened in the affair. They proceeded to score four in the second, three in the third and six in the fourth en route to a 27 run win.

The second game saw more of the same. After scoring four runs in the first, the Bloodhounds picked up 13 in the second inning to take a 17-0 lead after two innings.

Once again, each player in the lineup, many of whom are regularly serve as reserve players, registered at least one hit. Starting pitcher, Kim Bifulco (Staten Island, NY, St. John Villa) had an incredible second game. The freshman picked up the win in her first career start. But at the plate she was just as impressive as she went 5-for-7 with four runs, seven RBI. She also blasted a homerun, the first of her college career, for John Jay's only extra base hit of the game. John Jay had 23 hits, while 22 of them were singles.

Freshman reserves Johanny Santana (Elmhurst, NY, John Bowne), Briggitte Martinez (New York, NY, Health Professions)and Cassandra Velez (Gaithersburg, MD, Gaithersburg) also had big games in the night cap. Santana had four hits in the contest, while Martinez had four RBI. Velez scored five times and went 2-for-6.

John Jay returns to action on Tuesday for a twinbill at Floyd Bennett Field against Hunter College at 3:30 p.m.
